A Brief Introduction to JTUT 

    Jiangsu Teachers University of Technology (JTUT) was brought into existence as Changzhou Teachers College of Technology in 1984. It is the only one university in Jiangsu province independently established to train teachers for vocational education. It is one of the first-batch National Key Vocational Education Construction Bases of Teacher Training approved by the Ministry of Education. It successfully passed the Ministerial Qualified Assessment of Regular College Program Teaching Work in 2001.
 
    Jiangsu Teachers University of Technology is situated in Changzhou, the central region of the Yangtze River Delta, and a renowned historical and cultural city in Jiangsu Province. The city, historically important in its politics, economy, culture and academic studies, is widely known for its talented personalities and abundant natural resources.  In its history, it was known as an “important and strategic city among Wujun, Wuxing and Huiji,” a “cultural ancient city with richest Confucian traditions in the adjacent eight counties”. Gong Zizhen, a distinguished scholar in the Qing Dynasty once wrote “Great names can be found here, there, and everywhere, /But no place in the Southeast can with Changzhou compare.” Its long history, cultural richness and education-focused tradition provide the university with an ideal environment.
  
    JTUT covers an area of 1,440 mu (approximately 97 hectares), with a total floor space of nearly 370,000 square meters. Honored as Jiangsu Provincial Garden Unit, the modern university campus has elegant environment, impressive building and picturesque scenery, which is full of unique humanistic atmosphere and charming beauty indigenous to the water country in south of the Yangtze River. And all these provide unique environment for those in pursuit of knowledge and truth.
 
     JTUT owns 12 secondary schools, 2 institutes and 1department, including School of Mechanical & Automobile Engineering, School of Electricity & Information Engineering, School of Computer Science & Engineering, School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, School of Economics & Management, School of Art & Design, School of Foreign Languages, School of Pedagogy, School of Humanities & social Sciences, School of Mathematics & Physics, Sino-German International Institute, Institute of Finance & Economics, Dongfang School (a state-owned nongovernmental school), School for Continuing Education, and Department of Physical Education. It covers 7 academic disciplines, that is, engineering, education, science, literature, management, economics and law, including 30 undergraduate majors. It boasts of 2 provincial key construction disciplines, 1 provincial feature specialty, 1 provincial brand construction specialty, 2 provincial feature construction specialties, 1 provincial key construction laboratory, 1 provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, 2 provincial experimental teaching demonstration construction centers and 9 provincial brand courses.。   
 
    JTUT now has 12,762 full-time students, and 1,134 staff members among which are 765 teachers, with 284 holders of high-ranking titles (including 65 full professors) and 61 doctors and 348 masters. Of the teachers, 2 have been honored Excellent Teacher of the Nation and Model Worker of the Nation in the Field of Education respectively, 7 have received “Government Special Allowance” granted by the State Council, 8 have become winners of Zeng Xianzi Prize of the Ministry of Education, 4 have been honored Excellent Teacher of Jiangsu or Model Worker in the Field of Education of Jiangsu, 4 have firstly been awarded Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts of Jiangsu “333 Advanced Talent-training Project”, 22 have been elected Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts of Jiangsu “Qinglan Project” or candidates for Outstanding Young Key Teachers of Jiangsu, 43 are doctor supervisors or master supervisors. Moreover, JTUT has engaged some well-known experts or scholars at home and broad like Qiu Dingfan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as honorary or part-time professors.
 
    JTUT possesses teaching & research instruments and equipments with the total value of 104 million yuan, and has a collection of 1,164.3 thousand volumes of books and 1,527.4 thousand volumes of e-books and 24 kinds of databases in addition to its own databases characterized by fine arts, art design and policies & regulations on education. It has constructed a campus web with a velocity of 1Gbps to the building and 100Mbps to the desktop and with over 5,600 hot links as well, setting up the e-learning by introducing 285 national brand courses and designing more than 250 web courses, and has created and practiced 2 comprehensive systems for academic affairs management and teaching assessment respectively. JSTU owns a total area of playground covering 83,275.29 square meters including a floor space of 8,063.49 square meters and is well-equipped with facilities for physical education and training.
 
    Abiding by the principle of scientific development, JTUT insists on maintaining development as the absolute commitment by the performance of the three strategies of “Development on Quality, Consolidation by Human Resources, Prosperity with Uniqueness”. Oriented by market demand for special talents, the University regards talents cultivation as the fundamental work and student construction as the central task. It adheres to the ideology that “the university owns its unique features, all specialties possess their distinguished particularities, and each student displays his/her own strong points” as competitive advantages so as to improve education quality profoundly. JTUT mainly centers on teacher education while actively exploring non - teacher education. Undergraduate education is its predominant education pattern while postgraduate education is going to establish. Till now, a new disciplinary system of both liberal arts and natural science concentrating on engineering and education has been established in JTUT, including   disciplines as engineering, education, natural science, liberal arts, economics, management and law. Then on the basis of “Consolidation, Deepening, Improvement and Development” and for target to improve education quality and to make profit, the University gives priority to discipline construction and attaches importance to teaching force construction to realize its fulfillment of improvement of education quality and benefit the society.
    In order to meet the demand of national vocational education and serves to social & economic development, JTUT actively probes into education theories for higher vocational teachers schools. It keeps on enforcing teaching construction, deepening education reform, innovating talent cultivation mode and perfecting teaching management system & teaching quality supervision system by means of promotion of score system, flexible credit system, module course system, classified teaching and graduate research project system etc. The “three- certificate system” (the diploma, the technology certificate, and the teacher’s certificate required for a student to graduate.) forms the harmonious unity of “academy, technology and teaching ability”. Another uniqueness of the university is to cultivate “double-skilled teachers”, who can be teachers in classroom and technicians in workshop. Because of outstanding teaching ability, advantageous professional practice skills and excellent quality in career creation & innovation, graduates of our school are warmly welcomed by employment units and “Employment Rate at One Tim” has remained more than 96% for consecutive years. As far as we are informed, many graduates have grown to be leaders & backbone forces of vocational schools and elites of different fields. Till now, JSTU has developed more than 16000 graduates and made great contribution to local economic construction and social development.
 
    JTUT has also achieved great success in teaching, research and discipline construction. Since the 10th five-year plan, teachers here have undertaken 59 projects on teaching research & reform sponsored by Ministry of Education & Jiangsu Province and 183 teaching reform projects of school levels. 7 projects have been appraised of “Teaching Achievement Award” of national and provincial level and 44 ,projects of school level. Currently, 547 research projects in different fields are undertaken, among which 1 project is sponsored by National Natural Science Fund, 2 programs by National Social Science Fund, 2 tasks under the national 11th five-year plan for educational sciences and 2 programs under the national 10th five-year plan for national arts & science. In addition, the University has played major part in 5 projects supported by National Social Science Fund, 6 by National Natural Science Fund, 20 research projects of other fields, 52 programs of provincial or ministry level, with 30 million RMB research funds for projects in hand. In recent 3 years, teachers of our University have published 2300 academic papers and 133 books or textbooks concerning various disciplines, 113 of which have been retrieved by the three famous SCI、EI、ISTP. Besides, it has applied for 36 national patents, 24 authorized. The University has won 96 research awards of municipal prefectures or even higher, 1 project for State Technological Invention Award (main participant, ranking the 3rd of all), 1 award for progress in science and technology for National Defense, 5 for progress in science and technology of Jiangsu Province, 3 for excellence in philosopher and social science of provincial level and 1 for outstanding work in education and scientific research supported by Ministry of Education. There are 23 research institutions and Vocational and Technical Education Research Center of Jiangsu Province authorized by Provincial Education Department. JTUT is the director unit of the Professional Committee of Application for Deep Process of Precious Metals of China Non-Ferrous Metals Industrial Association, and that of the Professional Committee of Precious Metal Recycling of China National Resources Recycling Association.
 
    In 1999, JTUT was ranked as one of the first-batch National Key Vocational Education Construction Bases of Teacher Training approved by the Ministry of Education, and vice-director unit of Professional Committee of Teachers of Vocational Education of Chinese Society of Technical and Vocational Education. Since the performance of the 10th five-year plan , this training base has not only fostered more than 890 headmasters and management talents and more than 6700 backbone teachers for national and Jiangsu training & vocational schools, but also taken on the task of teacher cultivation for overseas vocational education.
In addition to the abovementioned achievements, JTUT has also carried out active international exchange & cooperation and made constructive attempt in promoting teaching & education reform, for instance, exploring new cultivation mode of “double-skilled” vocational teachers and higher application-oriented professional talents; promoting professional education and deepening teaching reform comprehensively; realizing localization of German education sources and practicing internationalization of teaching management. At present, JTUT has successively established excellent exchange and cooperation with many higher institutions of learning and vocational & technical training institutions from German, Canada, America, Ukraine, Korea, Norway and many other regions. At present, the University has initiated “2+2”cultivation program of international graduates with German Merseburg University of Applied Science. Besides, it has cooperated with German F+U Saxon Vocational Training Institute and set up a Sino-German Know-how Automobile Training Base so as to meet standards of German Automobile industry and vocational training and thus to develop professional teachers and high-end technical talents in automobile maintenance field, which is in great demand recently. We have also contracted with Norway and German on cultivation of postgraduates of related fields.
 
    JTUT is persistent in the Party construction and Spiritual Civilization construction , aiming to develop diligent working attitudes, strengthening code of profession in teaching and creating good learning atmosphere so as to ensure it in sound & healthy development in all aspects. After years of hard work, the University has achieved obvious successes and won a lot of awards and titles, such as “Civilization Unit of Jiangsu Province”, “Civilization School of Jiangsu Province” for 8 successive years, “Civilization Unit Model of Changzhou City” for 14 years in succession, “Advanced Unit for Carrying out ‘Three Activities Going to the Countryside’ of Graduates during Summer Vacation” for 13 years running. In 2005 and 2007, our School was granted the title of “Advanced Collective for Ideological and Political Education among Institutions of Higher Learning of Jiangsu Province”; in 2006, the University was identified as “Advanced University for Teaching Force Construction of Jiangsu Province”; in the same year, Party Committee of our university won the title of “Advanced Grass-Roots Party Organization among Jiangsu Institutions for Higher Learning”; last year, JSTU was awarded more honors such as “Advanced Collective for National Linguistic Work”, “Advanced University for Physical Education of Jiangsu Province” “Advanced Collective for Graduate Employment of Jiangsu Colleges and Universities” and “Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization Construction of Jiangsu Province”.
